Body Shape

Are you an apple or a pear?
Body shape is affected by fat distribution. Fat deposits form under the skin and between the organs in the abdomen, this distribution of fat creates two body shapes: "apples" and "pears", which are genetically determined and influenced by gender differences.

To assess fat distribution the Waist: Hip Ratio (WHR) can be taken:

What your Body Shape Results Mean

Women: A WHR of 0.9 or more = "apple-shape"
A WHR of less than 0.9 = "pear-shape"

Men: A WHR of 0.85 or = "apple-shape"
A WHR of less than 0.85 = "pear-shape"

Apple-shapes have an increased physical health risk and for health reasons a weight loss programme should be undertaken to decrease the amount of central fat distribution.

Pear shapes are less susceptible to health implications, although a weight loss programme that includes exercise will decrease the amount of fat located in these regions.

Apple shapes are more prone than pear shapes to some life-threatening diseases, including coronary heart disease, strokes, breast cancer, diabetes and fertility problems, due to fat surrounding the internal organs.

Body Mass Index

Please note that the Body Mass Index calculator (BMI) is a guide only. It takes no account of muscle vs fat for example.
Using the BMI scale, many athletes, and almost all rugby or American Football players, are
classified as overweight. This is because they are solid muscle and weigh heavy for their height.

Please use your common sense when applying this calculator - if you are an athlete or an ex athlete you will know if you are a solid human being or a flabby one needing some attention! Other good guides for seeing how overweight you are include: - honestly looking at yourself naked in the mirror and seeing how you look; seeing if you can pinch a handful of flesh around your waist when you stand up or seeing if you always need to buy above average clothes sizes in a range of shops.

What BMI Results Mean

oA BMI of less than 18.5 is considered "Underweight"
oA BMI of 18.5 - 24.9 is considered "Normal"
oA BMI of 25 - 29.9 is considered "Overweight"
oA BMI of 30 or more is considered "Obese"

The higher the figure the greater the risk to your health.

The BMI does not account for differences between lean mass and fat mass, therefore should only be used as a guide.

When measured with the 'Waist : Hip Ratio' calculator you have a more accurate measurement of physical health risk.
